How to Prevent Mold in a Humid Climate: 9 Practical Steps

Living in the Lowcountry means making peace with humidity. You're not going to win a fight against the marsh air — but you don't have to. Mold prevention isn't about turning your home into a desert. 4. Use your exhaust fans like you mean it. Run the bathroom fan during and for 20 minutes after a shower. Run the kitchen fan while you cook. That steam has to go somewhere.
5. Fix leaks in the first 48 hours. Mold can take hold within a day or two of water sitting. A small drip handled fast is a non-event; ignored, it's a project.
6. Give closed-up rooms airflow. Guest rooms, closets, and rarely-used spaces get stagnant. Crack the door, run a fan, let the air move.
7. Mind the AC and its drainage. Your system pulls a lot of moisture out of the air — make sure the condensate line is draining and not backing up. Change filters on schedule so it runs efficiently.
8. Watch the quiet spots. Behind furniture on exterior walls, under sinks, around windows that sweat. Mold likes the corners you don't look at.
9. Wipe down condensation. Sweating windows and cold pipes leave water sitting. A quick wipe denies mold the standing moisture it needs.
